Lake the Pena, with clear blue water

  • Distance from Mas de Pau: 28 minutes by car
  • Dogs allowed

The Pena lake – in the bed of the Pena River – forms an whole with the natural environment of the Matarraña region. There are always few people and during the high season, you can rent kayaks and pedal boats. The water is clean, warm and with clay soil. There are several picnic tables, making it a nice place for families.

It is located at the foot of the Beceite Els Ports and although there are more accesses, those that are in the best condition are the paved track from Beceite; or, the track that starts from the A-1414 road between Fuentespalda and Valderrobres. These options are the best if you want to go by car.

Its construction began in 1909, flooding several of the farmhouses that populated those areas. The work was completed in 1930. The dam is 41 meters high and 119 meters long, covers 129 hectares and has a capacity of 18,500,000 cubic meters. It receives its name from the river, the Pena, which in turn takes its name from the mountain it surrounds, La Caixa, which was formerly called Peña Aznar Lagaia. Its use is eminently agricultural.
